Verse of the day: We love because he loved us first (1 John 4. 19).
Since loving God is proof that He loves you with elective love (Romans 8:28, etc. ), the security that God loves you with elective love cannot be the basis of your love for him. Our love for him, which is proof of our choice, is our spiritual apprehension of the fully fulfilling glory of this God.
- It is not primarily gratitude for a benefit received.
- But recognition and the pleasure of receiving it would produce overflowing gratitude.
- This recognition and joy are.
- Or should go.
- According to the scriptures.
- Immediately accompanied by the security that they have actually been given to us.
- For eternal joy.
The call of the gospel (Christ died for sinners, believes in him and you will be saved) is not primarily a call to believe that he died for your sins, but this, because he is the God who redeems at such a cost and with such wisdom and holiness is worthy of trust and a truly satisfying rest for all my desires.
Believing this (i. e. , realizing and understanding) is immediately accompanied by the confidence that we are saved and that he is dead for us, for the promise of salvation is given to those who believe in him.
So the essence of Christian hedonism is at the heart of what saving faith is and what it really means: Christ or loving God.
Compare: “Do we love because he loved us first? (1 John 4:19). This may mean that God’s love strengthens our love for him through the incarnation, atonement, and work of the Holy Ghost, not that our reason for loving is primarily that He has done so much for us.
Or you can point out that as we contemplate and understand God spiritually as the kind of God who loves sinners like us with such a surprisingly free grace and through such a wonderfully wise and sacrificed atonement, we are drawn to rejoice in this God for whom He is in It is better than considering that affirmation means that we love Him first because we consider ourselves personal and particularly chosen by him.
