JEAN CRISOSTOMO
Let no one cry out for his iniquities, for forgiveness shook brighter from the tomb. No one fears death, for the Savior’s death has set us free. Because he was captive to her, he annihilated her. When he went down to hell, he took hell captive. He exasperated it when he tasted his flesh. Isaiah, anticipating this, exclaimed, Was hell angry when he found you?he was angry because he had been abolished. He was angry that people were laughing at him. He was angry that he had been killed, imprisoned with chains. He took a body and found God face to face. He took the earth and found heaven. He took the visible and fell upon the invisible. O death, where’s your sting? Oh, hell, where’s your victory?Christ has risen and you have been defeated. Christ is risen and the demons have fallen. Christ rose and the angels rejoiced. Christ is risen, lives and reigns.
LEO SCHUSTER
We often like to focus on the human aspects of Jesus, and it is important to remember that Jesus was completely human, but he was also completely God. What does it mean that Jesus was completely God? And why would it be so important that he, our Redeemer, really be God?
The Apostle John opens his Gospel by declaring that Jesus is the Eternal Incarnate. And he explains, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God?”And the Word became flesh and dwelned among us, and have we seen his glory, as the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth?(1, 1, 14). In his letter to the Colossus, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Why does the fulness of the Deity dwell bodily in him?(Cl 2. 9).
Likewise, Jesus himself often affirmed his divinity and that he was one with the Father, on one occasion some of his listeners understood what he said and tried to stone him, explaining that they stoned him for nothing, but out of blasphemy. , because being a man, do you become God? (Jn 10:33). Does the book of Revelation describe Jesus as the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, saith the Lord, who he is, who he was, and who should come, the Almighty?(1,8). In fact, he’s not just a man. He really is God.
So why is it important that Jesus, our Redeemer, is truly God?Our sin was committed against God; only God can forgive a transgression against himself; that’s why some religious leaders of Jesus’ day were horrified when he said he forgaved sins. They understood the implications of what he said, how could a simple man forgive the sins we have committed against God?A man can’t, but God can.
Jesus had to be completely human to be our substitute, but he needed to be completely God so that his obedience and suffering would be perfect, so that God’s righteousness would be completely and eternally satisfied.
God the Son, because of our sin, we could never bear anger or overcome death. Only you, the Holy One, can suffer the just punishment of sin and overcome death. We are grateful to pave the way for God for us, so that we may be pleased in Him forever. Amen.
