RICHARD BAXTER
Oh, what ineffable mysteries and treasures of mercy are here presented in a sacrament! We are here in communion with a reconciled God, and the great reconciler brings us into his presence. Here we have communion with our Blessed Redeemer, crucified and glorified, and offered to us as our life-giving, preserving, and strengthening head. Here we have communion with the Holy Spirit, who applies the benefits of redemption to our soul, drawing us to the Son, communicating his light, life and strength, increasing and activating his graces within us. Here we are in communion with the body of Christ, his sanctified people, the heirs of life. When the minister of Christ, in his commission, represents Christ crucified in our eyes, through the bread and wine intended for this use, we see Christ crucified, as if he were before us, and our faith appropriates him. , and we perceive the truth. the cure; And we build our souls on this rock When the same minister, by commission of Christ, offers us his body, his blood and his blessings, he shows himself firm and valid for us, as if he were offered from the mouth of Christ himself. And when our soul receives it, through this faith that the Holy Spirit desires in us, participation is as true as that of our body receiving the bread and wine that represent it.

The Lord’s Supper is a sign and a seal of the covenant; this means that he represents and confirms to us God’s precious promise that through Jesus Christ he will be our God and we will be his people. celebration of God’s presence and experience of communion. We also have something that nourishes us, and in the Lord’s food, we project the glory to come.
First, we remember the Lord’s Supper; In the Lord’s food, Jesus told the disciples that they would proclaim his death until he came. The bread and wine, body, and blood of Christ in the Lord’s food are the representation of a sacrifice of the covenant. Both building blocks indicate that Jesus’ death was an intentional act on his part, he gave himself as a sacrifice in our place, for the forgiveness of our sins, so every time we celebrate the Lord’s Supper we must remember the meaning and importance of Jesus Christ’s death in our name. Do we have to remember that. ? You’re doing this in memory of me? (Lk 22. 19). We celebrate the glorious work of atonement Jesus Christ has done for us.
Second, the Lord’s Supper is also a celebration of God’s presence. Isn’t it wonderful to be invited to kneel at God’s table? It’s really surprising in light of our rebellion. In Genesis 3, Satan said to Eve and Adam, “Take and eat of this fruit. Did you eat the fruit against God’s command and what was the result?Did it result in satisfaction and realization? This resulted in his expulsion from God’s presence. But at the Lord’s table, the Lord Jesus himself invites us to enter into his presence. When Jesus tells his disciples, “Take and eat,” the words of the serpent are turned in the garden. Derek Kidner has this wonderful phrase: “Will God prove poverty and death first?”Take and eat, become verbs of salvation?. We experience it every time we go to the Lord’s Table, every time we hear the pastor say, “Take it and eat it, everybody. “It is a celebration to meet God again, to have his presence with us and our pleasure in his close communion.
Third, the Lord’s food is communion. It is communion with God and his people. Not only do we have fellowship with the living god by grace; we not only have fellowship with the living God for what Jesus did for us on the cross; we are also in communion with each other. When we are united with the Lord Jesus Christ, we are united with all who are united with Him. Paul therefore said to the Corinthians, “Do they have to discern the body?(1 Co 11. 29). It doesn’t say that you should understand something mystical about the elements of the Lord’s Supper. What body are you talking about? The body of Christ, the Church, the communion of believers.
Finally, the Lord’s food is a spiritual food. It’s a means of grace. It is one of God’s ways to build and nurture us, confirm our faith, and strengthen us for growth. The Lord’s Supper anticipates the glory to come. Jesus washed the disciples’ feet on the night he was betrayed and served the elements of the Lord’s Supper. Interestingly, when Jesus speaks of the weddings of the Lamb for consummation (Lk 12:37), in glory, when the great end comes and everyone has recognized him as king, he says that on that day he will invite us to lie down, like the disciples. They lay down on the night of the Lord’s Supper, and he will come and serve us.
Yes, at the Lord’s Supper, we plan the Lamb’s wedding dinner, where we will sit together in glory and our Savior will serve us what we need. What a joy to come to the Lord’s table!
Bread of life, we take the Lord’s food in respectful obedience. We do not want to receive it unworthily; thus, we approach in repentance and faith. Help us forgive the sins of those who have sinned against us, especially the believers with whom we share the bread and cup. May our participation in this food proclaim your saving death and our deep need!Amen.
