As a result, there is much confusion, even in the church, as to the exact nature of the new birth. The purpose of this book is to examine what it means, biblically and theologically, to be born again. First of all, I must point out that the expression “born again Christian”, in a strict and technical sense, is redundant; because, according to the New Testament, for a person to become a Christian, they must first be born again (John 3: 3-5). Therefore, if someone is born again, he is a Christian. So, call someone? Born again Christian? It’s like saying you’re a Christian twice. The New Testament does not recognize any other type of Christian. Also, the phrase “born again” is a popular synonym for the theological word regenerated. I know of no church in the history of Christianity that has not affirmed a doctrine of regeneration or new birth. In other words, every body of Christ in Western history has had to develop some kind of concept of what it means to be spiritually reborn, because this concept was not born with theologians, Bible commentators, or preachers. The very idea of spiritual rebirth has its origin in the teaching of Jesus. Since Christians identify themselves as followers of Christ, they are naturally interested in understanding what Jesus said about this idea.
