Hebrews is a wonderful book. In the faithful leadership course of The Biblical Theology of the New Testament, we learn how the author of Hebrews seeks to exalt the superiority of Christ. Hebrews 12: 18-24 speaks of the superiority of the new covenant (symbolized by “Mount Zion”) unlike the old covenant (symbolized by “Mount Sinai”). Verses 18 through 21 show how Mount Sinai symbolizes the earthly and severe aspect of the law given by Moses. Verses 22-24 show the bliss of those who came to Mount Zion, while enjoying free access to God, through “Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,” whom he devoted with his own blood.
Spurgeon comments on this passage: “The center around which we meet these days is not Sinai with its thunder and fire; Is it the cross? He is the Induced Savior; Is he the great mediator of a covenant better than the one Moses proclaimed?
