Did you sleep for a few hours, wake up, but were you still tired? You may remember Washington Irving’s story, Rip Van Winkle. Rip is a husband dominated by his wife who roams the mountains to escape, meets a strange group falls asleep and sleeps for twenty years. He wakes up and discovers that the world has completely changed, his wife is dead and his neighbors envious of having freed himself, asleep, from the natural life of his grumpy wife.
The surprising thing about Irving’s story is that Van Winkle’s dream didn’t allow him to rest, it was a restless dream. It was kind of a break that didn’t really help. And sometimes we know what it is, because our hearts and minds are so full and eager to rest well. Sometimes we wake up or come back from a tired break.
- The grace of the fourth commandment is that God promises to give us a true rest and rest when we find our rest in Him.
- As we remember the Sabbath day.
- Sanctifying it to the Lord.
- We find that we are beginning to enter into the rest God offers and test the heavenly rest that will come.
- Resting in the new heavens and the new earth.
In Exodus 20:8-10, it is clear that God gives the Sabbath rest as a commandment. However, we often forget that when we remember the “day of rest, to keep it holy,” God wants us to use this day for Him: “the seventh day is the Sabbath day of the Lord your God. “What does that mean that one day out of seven? Is it not a day of our choice, but a God-chosen day and different from the other days?It must be reserved for the service of the Lord.
And this commandment is based on both creation and redemption. In Exodus 20, creation serves as the basis: Why, in six days, did the Lord make heavens and earth [?] And, on the seventh day, did you rest?(v. 11). The week of creation serves as a model for our weeks of creation: just as God worked six days and rested one, so must we.
But in Deuteronomy 5, this commandment finds its basis in redemption: why will you remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt and that the Lord your God made you with a powerful hand and an outstretched arm?(V. 15) . For God redeemed His people from captivity with the blood of the firstborn lambs, their lives, and their time belonged to the Lord; he returned them in redemption and asked on Saturday as a testimony, he?Of the week, a testimony of his redemptive work.
The expectation and commandment of the Sabbath find its fulfillment and its continued validity in Christ, because Jesus Himself emphasized the relief that was represented that day; far from the end of the Sabbath, Jesus filled him with meaning for his people.
In Luke 4:16-21, Jesus went to the synagogue on a Sabbath, “according to his custom. “He took the roll and read it in Isaiah 61, declaring, “Today, the scripture you have just heard has been fulfilled. The connection between the Sabbath and the Messiah was clear: the promised Sabbath of rest and rejoicing, represented in creation and redemption, had come to Jesus; brings good news, favor to the Lord, freedom, vision, and deliverance.
Jesus loved to heal on a Saturday. This seems clear in Luke 13:10-17: A woman possessed by one?Sick spirit, eighteen years ago? He is healed and glorifies God. The Pharisees are furious Jesús. Su answer: “Shouldn’t this woman be freed from this captivity on a Saturday?”Isn’t that appropriate and correct? Creation and redemption are found on a Sabbath to emphasize the gift of Christ’s grace, which brings true renewal, rest, and rest.
Jesus does these things because he is the Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:23-28), he is the donor of the Sabbath day, as creator, who testifies to the Sabbath day. And, as a redeemer, time began again with the resurrection. In fact, on the Sunday of his resurrection, time began again; The first day of the new creation began. Sabbath rest has its meaning assured on the Sunday of the Resurrection, becoming the day of Christian worship (1 Corinthians 16. 2; Revelation 1. 10). We remember this day for the Lord’s service in worship and mercy. , in response to God’s good commandment and the gift of Christ’s grace.
Those of us who trust in Jesus not only find rest for our souls from Sunday to Sunday, but we also have a promise to enter into the final rest of the Sabbath (Hebrews 4:9-10). We testify, every week, that we have rested our work on our attempts to appease God or win his favor, even in the way we “remember the Sabbath. “Instead, “we rest on Jesus and receive Him. ” In it we find rest for our souls (Matthew 11:28 -30).
That is why saturday brings a true rest and a true rest; we are not in a frenzy trying to win God’s favor, but the Lord of the Sabbath Himself resurrected us and will resurrect us from the dead (Ephesians 2. 4-6).
