The one with pride

Verse of the day: Now answer those who say, Today or tomorrow, we will go to a city like this, and spend a year there, and negotiate, and enjoy it. happen tomorrow What’s your life? You are like a mist that appears for a moment and then dissipates; Instead, you must say: If the Lord wills, we will not only live, but we will also do this or that, but now He boasts of your arrogant pretensions. . Any boast like this is bad (James 4:13-16).

When you consider three categories of temptation to autonomy – wisdom, power and wealth – they are a strong incentive for the final form of pride, namely atheism. The safest way to remain supreme in our own esteem is to deny everything above us.

  • That’s why the proud care about looking at others.
  • “A proud man always despises things and people.
  • And of course.
  • As you look down.
  • Don’t you see something that’s above him?(CSLewis.
  • Simple Christianity [WMF Martins Fontes]).

However, to preserve pride, it may be easier to proclaim that there is nothing upstairs to look at. “The pervert, in his pride, does not seek; that there is no God, are all your thoughts?(Psalm 10. 4). In the end, the proud must convince themselves that God does not exist.

One of the reasons for this is that God’s reality is very present in all the details of life. Pride cannot tolerate God’s intimate participation in the very management of the ordinary affairs of life.

Pride does not love God’s sovereignty. Therefore, pride does not love the existence of God, because God is sovereign. This could be expressed by saying, “There is no God. ” Or you can express yourself by saying, “I’m going to drive to Sao Paulo at Christmas. “

Tiago says, “Don’t be so sure. ” Instead, say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and go to Sao Paulo for Christmas. “James’ point is that God decides whether we will go to Sao Paulo and live to the end of this devotion. This is extremely offensive, to the self-sufficiency of pride: not even having control to get to the end of this devotion without having a hit!

Tiago says that not believing in God’s sovereign rights to direct the details of his future is arrogance.

The way to combat this arrogance is to yield to God’s sovereignty in every detail of life and rest on his infallible promises to be powerful in our favor (2 Chronicles 16,9), follow us every day with kindness and mercy (Psalm 23:6), working for those who await him (Isaiah 64:4), and giving us all we need to live for his glory (Hebrews 13:21).

In other words, the remedy for pride is unshakable faith in God’s future grace.
