[The One of Grace] Reading the Bible (4)? Practical aids and reading plans

“It is absolutely necessary for happiness in the Lord to continue, for the scriptures to be read regularly. We should read the scriptures specifically and regularly sequentially and not choose a chapter here and there. If we do this, we will always be spiritual dwarves I tell you with affection. For the first four years after my conversion, I made no progress because I neglected the Bible. But when I read the whole Bible regularly, I immediately progressed. Then my peace and joy continued more and more. . I’ve been doing this for 47 years. I’ve read the Bible completes about 100 times and I still find it stimulating. So my peace and joy grew more and more. ? (DLMoody)

Some people mistakenly think that everything that is done out of love cannot be done routinely, it is like saying that the marathoner who trains every day does not like what he does, there is truth in the accusation because there are bible reading routines and hypocritical prayer and lack of true love for the Savior , but that doesn’t mean that having a routine is inherently wrong. Having a healthy habit will lead you to grow it continuously.

  • Now.
  • As in the morning or afternoon.
  • There is no single rule.
  • Yet there are certainly many advantages to starting the day in the presence of the Lord; and from experience we know how difficult it is to stop for the rest of the day.
  • Something will always struggle to get our attention.
  • So have a moment and a place (especially a moment).
  • In fact.
  • Why not several moments? Why not start and end the day in the Lord’s presence with reading and prayer?Establish a routine and try to stick to it for the Savior’s sake.

In this video, John Piper explains how the devil conquers our prayers (and reading the Bible) even before they happen.

John Piper in the video below highlights 4 requests to pray to God before you begin reading the scriptures:

Tilt my heart to your testimonies (Psalm 119:36)

Reveal my eyes so that I may contemplate the wonders of your law (Psalm 119:18).

Give me my heart to fear only your name (Psalm 86:11).

Satisfy us in the morning with your goodness, that we may sing with joy and rejoice every day (Psalm 90:14).

We recommend watching the video!

I hid your word in my heart for fear of sirking against you (Psalm 119:11).

Memorizing the scriptures (or hiding the Word in the heart) is a great ally in the battle of Christian life; it is directly related to the war of holiness, as we see it to describe, as well as to the temptation of our Savior in theRefore, to have the Word memorized so that you can preach yourself (and others) and pray the scriptures is of great benefit. John Piper presents 8 reasons to memorize the scriptures and 10 reasons to pray.

It is a feeling that accompanies all those who do not understand why the long list of genealogies and laws is found in the Bible. The problem is not the Biblia. La Bible is not boring. The entertainment of the world it is. However, our carnal passions tend strongly to disagree, so what to do when that feeling invades us.

First, pray (as taught in the IDDS above), then try to see him from the right perspective, try to find Christ on each page of the scriptures, because each page points to Him. Learn more about this in this article about the wrong and correct perspectives for reading the scriptures.

Read each year with a different translation, although we probably have one that we value more. However, know how to differentiate the translation from the paraphrase. In this video, John Piper talks a little bit about it. There is no problem reading paraphrases like “The Message”, but you should know that it is a paraphrase and not a translation in the strict sense of the word. Then you will read the interpretation of the person (Eugene Peterson in the case of “The Message”) in the text and not in the text itself. Therefore, if you are going to do a theological study on a passage, rely on more reliable translations and read the paraphrases in the same way that we read the biblical comments.

This question would certainly merit a complete article, but above all, if you have no idea of the world of biblical translations, we recommend that you use Almeida Revista e Atualizada.

For now, we have two plans to read the Bible and will add more over time. Let us know if you want a particular one by leaving a comment in this post.

We bring a new plan (the one on the right), not yet available in Portuguese, prepared by Navpress Discipleship Journal. Reading is taken from entire books in the Bible, alternating VT and NT, plus a poetic book. The plan is that you only have 25 days a month, so it’s always time to catch up on reading in case of delay (which usually happens with most people). Wasting time is very frustrating and the plan takes that into account.

Also consider in your annual reading looking for a particular topic, for example, Piper comments that he marked all the texts that spoke of God’s attributes, which can encourage you to read and know God.
