Verse of the day: Now, if God sees the grass of the field like this, which exists today and is baked tomorrow, how much more do you, men of little faith?(Matthew 6:30).
Jesus affirms that the root of anguish is an inadequate faith in our Father’s future grace.
- One reaction to such a statement may be: “This is not good news!In fact.
- It is very discouraging to know that what I thought was a simple struggle against an anxious temperament is rather a much deeper struggle for trust in God.
My answer agrees, but then I don’t
Suppose you feel stomach pain and treat you with medications and diets of all kinds, without result, and then assume that your doctor tells you, after a routine visit, that you have small bowel cancer. Was that good news? You say, “Of course not!” And I agree.
But let me ask the question another way: are you glad that your doctor has discovered cancer when it is still treatable and can be treated with great success? You say, “Yes, I’m very happy that the doctor has diagnosed the actual problem. “Again, I agree.
So the news that he has cancer is not good news. But, in another sense, this is good news, because knowing what’s really bad is a good thing, especially when your problem can be dealt with successfully.
This is to learn that the real problem behind anxiety is disbelief in the promises of God’s future grace. And God can work in a wonderfully healing way when we shout, “I believe!Help me in my lack of faith!” (Mark 9. 24).
