The desire for grace

At the beginning of a sermon in Romans 8. 29, Spurgeon said:

It was therefore very natural for a profound spiritual experience to lead him to clearly perceive the doctrines of grace. Why such an experience? The only school where these great truths can be learned effectively. Lack of depth in inner life and? The cause of most doctrinal errors in the church. Health, the conviction of sin, a deep humiliation in the face of sin, and a feeling of total weakness and indignity naturally lead the mind to believe in the doctrines of grace, while superficiality in these subjects leaves man satisfied with His superficial belief. Teachings, commonly called Calvinist doctrines, are generally the most appreciated and warmly received by those who have had intense conflicts of the soul and learned the strength of inner corruption and the need for divine grace.

  • He also said.
  • What can I say to you who are believers.
  • If not this: by this grace.
  • Show gratitude.
  • Live longer as your Lord lived.
  • And more consecrated in the service of God.
  • Nothing can make a man work for Christ as much as free grace; and those who believe in this doctrine of free grace and yet are inactive certainly defend the doctrine in injustice.
  • Because there is no such active and motor principle.
