Verse of the day: God chose you from the beginning for salvation, through the sanctification of the Spirit (2 Thessalonians 2:13).
Dozens of passages in the Bible speak of our final salvation (but not of our choice) as conditioned by a changed heart and life. Then the question arises: how can I be sure that I will persevere in the faith and holiness necessary to inherit eternal life??
- The answer is that security is rooted in our choice (2 Peter 1.
- 10).
- Divine choice is a guarantee that God will commit himself to completing with sanctifying grace what his elective grace has begun.
This is the meaning of the new covenant: God not only orders obedience, but gives it: “The Lord your God will circumcis your heart and the heart of your offspring, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, to live ?(Deuteronomy 30. 6) Will I put my Spirit in you and make you walk in my statutes?(Ezekiel 36. 27; see 11. 20).
Choice ensures that: those who [God] justified, those who also glorified?(Romans 8:30), so that all the conditions established for glorification may be fulfilled by the power of God’s grace.
Choice is the fundamental basis of security because, because God’s commitment is to save, God’s commitment is to give power to all that is necessary for salvation.
