Most of the mistakes a pastor makes in a church that struggles and needs revitalization are due to his lack of knowledge about what to do, the lack of a clear reflection on this subject causes the pastor to listen to all kinds of advice and react abruptly to them. what he sees and hears in his church. Some say it changes everything immediately. Others insist that the pastor seek life outside the church. If a pastor doesn’t have a clear vision of what to do and an even clearer idea of what not to do, he will react and make hasty decisions based on the mess he finds.
A pastor should be able not to react too quickly to the problems and disorders he encounters, but to have a clear plan of how he should spend his time in the early years, regardless of the problems he inherits. The best approach for a pastor when he reaches a dysfunctional congregation and dies is simply to be pastor of these people, which is why pastors must be trained in the practical aspects of pastoral theology to be equipped for the work of the ministry.
- A simple definition of pastoral theology is the application of biblical theology pastorally with the aim of caring for God’s people.
In other words, pastoral theology informs the pastor about daily tasks to serve God’s people, including things like preaching, praying, visiting the sick, caring for widows, forming disciples, forming leaders, encouraging the weak, celebrating weddings and funerals. , to highlight some of them.
The key to the application of pastoral theology to the revitalization of the church focuses on these two principles: the biblical tasks of the shepherd to care for the flock; the absence of biblical pastoral theology often leads to pragmatism; the absence of an intentional will. A wise and creative desire to serve God’s people and go as far as possible can create purism (to learn more about pragmatism and purism, click here).
A pastor should not place the overwhelming expectation of transforming the church in eighteen months, but must arrive with a clear vision of what his call as a pastor is and do so with all his might. First, be prepared to be patient, and guide the souls of the people who will be there when you arrive. This allows the pastor to do what he can do and gives God time to do what only he can do.
