I’m sorry and delighted

Verse of the day: The Lord your God has chosen you to be his people among all the peoples on earth (Deuteronomy 7. 6).

  • What would the doctrines of grace look like if the sap of Augustinian pleasure flowed through every branch of that tree (that’s what I call it?Christian Hedonism ???.

Unconditional choice foreshadows the harshest and sweetest judgments for my soul. The fact that it is unconditional destroys all exaltation of its own; and the fact that this is a choice makes me your valuable asset.

This is one of the beauties of the biblical doctrines of grace: its worst desolations prepare us for its greatest delights.

To what extent might we become presumptuous in the words: “The Lord your God has chosen you, that you may be his people, among all the peoples on earth?(Deuteronomy 7. 6), if this choice depended in any way on our will. But to keep us from pride, the Lord teaches us that we are unconditionally chosen (Deuteronomy 7:7-9). “He has made his treasure miserable, ” while we sang with such joy.

Only the dark freedom and unconditionality of elective grace allow us to consider and prove gifts like our own, without the exaltation of the self.
