September 13th? Daily devotion CHARLES SPURGEON

Verse of the day: That, passing through the arid valley, makes it a source; blessings cover the first rain (Psalm 84. 6).

These words teach us that the comfort that one person achieves can often be useful to others, just as wells are used from generation to generation. We read a book full of consolations, which resembles Jonathan’s spear dripping honey. We believe our brother was here before us, he dug this well for us as well as himself. Many pilgrims dug wells for themselves, but the wells have also proven useful for others. We observe it in the Psalms as: “Why are you downcast, my soul?” (Psalm 42. 5). Travelers are delighted to see someone’s footprints on a deserted beach; we love to see the steps of other pilgrims crossing the arid valley. The pilgrims dig the well, but curiously, the fountain is filled from above rather than from below. We use the means, but the blessing does not come from them. We dug the well, but the sky is filling it with rain. ? The horse prepares for the day of battle, but does victory come from the Lord? (Proverbs 21:31). The means are linked to the end, but they do not produce it themselves. In this passage, see that the rains fill the well, so that it is useful as a water reservoir. Work is not wasted, but it is not a substitute for divine help. Grace can rightly be compared to rain, for its purity, its refreshing and life-giving influence, its coming from heaven, and the sovereignty with which it is sent or withheld. May our readers have showers of blessings; and that the wells they dig are filled with water. Oh, what are the means and laws without a smile from heaven! They are clouds without rain and springs without water. O God of love, open the windows of heaven and fill us with blessings.
