Why, oh God?

Michael Horton

Job was a totally devoted man of Dieu. I was so jealous of God’s honor that every time he took a family vacation, he sacrificed himself along the way. Satan then asks God: Why would he not be faithful? Is it so prosperous, so God allows Satan to test Job The text is clear in showing that God was not passive; He allowed suffering, he commanded suffering for Job, as in Joseph’s case, when evil what happened to him was a good inflicted on him by God. As Luther said, even the devil is God’s devil. He’s got a short leash.

Then disaster strikes. Satan attacks him at the height of his possessions, and Job responds by saying that the naked man has come out of his mother’s womb and that the naked man would return praising God. Then Satan attacks Job in his body. His wife orders his wife to command him to curse God and die. “We will accept the good of the Lord, not evil,” why would we accept from God only what makes us happy?

Job did not follow the theology of prosperity, but he knew friends who did, spent a quiet week, living with him, eating with him, but without saying a word, he did not need a theological sermon to take him down. Over the course of a week, Job’s friends began preaching to him, “Job, think about how you have taught so many people, your words have given strength to those who have stumbled, strengthened your knees, but now the difficulty comes knocking on your door, and you are discouraged ??

I don’t know where the phrase “Job’s patience” comes from, but I couldn’t be patient in distress. Why do I have to be patient? He couldn’t take it anymore and began to affect his relationship with God.

We believe that when people suffer, all they need is a vision of God in glory. We often preach about sovereignty and majesty, but it often overwhelms people. Job doesn’t say “why are you so far from me?” but “Why don’t you just leave me for a moment?”When we suffer, we often ask, “Where is God?” But for Job, the question was the opposite, like Job, we draw conclusions based on limited information, we’re trying to figure out what’s going on. We try to look up at heaven to see everything as God sees it.

Job’s friends continue: “If you are well with God, everything will be better. Are you fair? Who knows, you’re fishing. Satan tries to lead Job to apostasy. God makes Job understand justification only by faith, only by grace,” only in Jesus.

Friends make many sermons against Job, he listens to all the arguments, all this broken theology, and he simply lies in his bed, presents his claims as a human complaint, but manages to look out the window and see some hope. and prosperity, but it’s someone else’s hope that makes you look up. “I know that my redeemer lives and that in the end he will be on this earth, and after my body has been destroyed, I will still see it in my body with my own eyes. “

The last talking friend is a young man. Make it a stimulus for Timothy. White hair said a lot of nonsense, but the boy had very good theology. Encourage Job and rebuke his friends.

Like Job, we must plead before God for help, just as a man pleads for his friend.
