? To receive God’s favor in your life, must you offer and bring out the best in yourself?
Have you ever heard this phrase of an “evangelical church”?If this is the case, it is proof that our historical context is not very different from Luther’s.
- What about prayer? The problem is that it denies the full essence of Christianity and the Gospel.
- Dishonoring God and his Christ!Yes.
- Is this the danger level of this phrase?.
But why? The gospel is the good news that through faith (and only faith) in the death of our Savior on the cross, we have unlimited access to God, because we will never be able to pay what we owe God. It is only through the sacrifice, of the Son of God that we may be accepted before Him.
One of Luther’s main battles was against so-called “indulgences. “At that moment, with an economic amount, you could reduce your suffering or that of others to purgatory. Basically, you bought God’s favor and negotiated with the Most High.
Unfortunately, this is what the theology of prosperity has taught today. As in Luther’s day, we need people to stand in prayer and preach the Word by saying:
But if it is by grace, it is no longer by works; otherwise, grace is no longer grace. However, if it is by works, it is no longer grace; otherwise, the play is no longer a play. [Therefore,] you are separated from Christ, you who are justified by law [or who seek God’s favor on economic merit]; you have fallen out of favor (adapted from Romans 11: 6 and Galatians 5: 4)
