[PVE] Is tithing today? (2)

Before reading this article, I suggest you read the first one, if you haven’t already.

Secondary Questions I want to begin by pointing out that this discussion of tithing is secondary to issues important to our faith, as we have seen, tithing barely appears in the New Testament.

  • So we have two considerations: 1) As Piper says.
  • “any bad theology hurts people”; Secondly.
  • We must try to be as biblical as possible.
  • Also teaching our brethren and hers.
  • 2) Some of Paul’s recommendations on secondary issues are relevant:.

But behold, this freedom is by no means a scandal for the weak. [?] Therefore, if my brother is scandalized by food, I will never eat meat again, lest my brother be outraged (1 Corinthians 8: 9. 13)

One makes the difference between day and day, but another thinks the same thing every day. Everyone is fully convinced in their minds. (Romans 14:5)

I mean, on the one hand, he loves your brother by explaining the truth to him, on the other hand don’t scandalize him.

Several testimonies of people who gave tithing and were blessed by God. We do not want to deny that God can bless a person who, out of ignorance, gives his tithing with joy; nor that God can bless someone financially, but never the end in himself. Our finances have been given to us to show that they do not dominate us and that they serve the glory of God. Otherwise, all wealth is a curse. It is worth remembering that the devil can also enrich someone to deviate from the faith.

Thus, the best recommendation in this regard is the famous phrase of Luther:

“Any teaching that does not correspond to the scriptures must be rejected, even if it rains miracles every day?(Martin Luther).

Inability to offer the widow A brother commented that the example of the widow’s offer would not be valid as he was still in the Old Covenant, because Jesus was not dead and was a contradictory example. Clearly it was not the author’s intention to say that the widow was already a member of the early Church, but since her attitude was praised by Jesus, it serves as a model for the contribution of the church, which was in fact followed by the early church, as we see in Acts and 2 Corinthians. .

Without decimating, God’s work will not be sustained. This may be true in some places and the reason why this is true is that people were not decimated with joy to support God’s work, but by pure religiosity; and this kind of offering doesn’t please God. Let us also take the example of the New Testament, where entire plots were sold and deposited at the feet of the apostles for the livelihood of the poor (the livelihood of the poor is not the same as buying a private jet, to be clear). So no, it would not be better to take advantage of a good Old Testament law that is tithing to encourage brothers and sisters to offer, because what is often done is not encouragement, but coertion and, we know, that God loves those who give with joy.

Is tithing above the law? [Abraham and Melchizedek] Some have wondered how Abraham gave the tithing to Melchizedek before the Law so that tithing would be above the Law, also using Hebrews 7 to justify this. Below is an excerpt from T’s excellent text. Cesar Costa Leite, O Dzimo I also suggest reading the full text.

Is there a passage in Genesis 14. 20?It is used to defend the practice of tithing as supra-legal, that is, above the law Here is the argument: Abram gave tithing to Melchizedek, king of Salem, before the law was established Therefore tithing is before the law, which is why tithing lasts after the law.

Let us take another step to prove the validity of the above argument: Genesis 17,10: Here is my covenant, which you will keep between you and me and your offspring: every man among you will be circumcised. In Genesis 17:23-27, we see Abraham circumcised to himself, Ishmael, and all the men in his house. Let’s talk: Abram was circumcised before the law was established; therefore, circumcision is before the law and circumcision lasts after the end of the law.

Thus we have found that while this argument is valid for tithing, it is equally valid to justify the practice of circumcision.

A valuable standard of interpretation states that a descriptive text can illustrate a doctrine, but it cannot be the basis of a doctrine. However, it is common to fall into this error. [?] Therefore, if it is correct that the doctrine cannot be based on a descriptive text, [?] Genesis 14. 20 is not valid to justify the current practice of tithing.
