Let’s be honest. The very act of preaching is something alien to our generation, people are not used to listening to a person for a long time, our interactions are usually brief (posts, Facebook updates).
I want to convince you that explanatory preaching is necessary.
Three reasons why this problem is important
1. I feel that today’s church has lost confidence in preaching, exchanging short messages, videos and other things; However, I am convinced by the scriptures that the church lacks something important when it stops hearing a broader and uninterrupted sermon delivered in the power of the Spirit. The Word of God must be proclaimed and not only considered.
2. I feel that the church has lost confidence in explanatory preaching, the exchange of dialogues, stories, brief moralistic sermons.
3. We must work against the bad reputation that even some expositors have given to explanatory preaching. We have to be honest, some exhibits are just not good preaching. Some sermons are nothing more than a biblical commentary without any application or planning.
Many members of this generation consider that words do not make sense, however, since the beginning of the scriptures, the emphasis has been placed on the Word of God, precisely because our God says it is different from other false gods. God is the claim of fame and glory of our God. He believes by his Word, guides his people with His Word. God’s people were not known primarily by sight, but by hearing, knowing the God who speaks.
We recognize that our words affect others. However, our words cannot do what the Word of God can do. The power of God’s Word is unprecedented. He creates the Universe and gives life to man. The Word of God is always linked to the breath of God, showing that the Word of God gives life, we read it in Ezekiel’s passage from the valley of dry bones, in which God gives spiritual life to his people through the Word. He does so through his Word.
If this is true, if God gives life through His Word, church leaders must make the Word the center of church meeting, not because they are good preachers, but because God gave the power to preach His Word to give life.
I think people have seen preaching only as communicating truths about God and that’s why they believe they can teach about God through other means: books, videos, etc. However, if the preaching of God’s Word is as he gives life to the dead, then it is no longer a matter of personal taste, but of life or death.
In Matthew 10-1-15, we see that Christ gives the Apostles the power to preach over the kingdom of heaven and even affirms that anyone who has not received his word will reject the Word of God and be judged. Paul says that he is an ambassador of Christ and that by his word God exhorted his pastor listeners, do you believe that his preaching is the authoritative word that comes from the throne of heaven and brings reconciliation?
If all this is true, if a preaching is not a proclamation of God’s Word, it will be nothing more than an empty discourse of God’s invigorating power. Therefore, the role of the preacher is to expose the Word of God to the people. God (or perhaps better expose the people to the power of God’s Word). Display preaching occurs when the center point of the text becomes the center point of the sermon.
With this, (1) I am not saying that explanatory preaching should go verse by verse, it is a great way, but it can be preached explicitly without being sequential, the goal is to let the biblical text tell its message.
(2) I am not saying that explanatory preaching should shut down news messages; However, I believe that the best long-term diet for the church is one that is based on the books of the Bible. God did not inspire the Bible on a topical topic. (one section on prayer, one about money, etc. ) and there must be a reason for that.
(3) I am not saying that explanatory preaching is a series of conferences, a simple transfer of lifeless information.
(4) I am not saying that explanatory preaching has a specific style, preaching the exhibition is a method and not a style.
(5) I am not saying that explanatory preaching is not evangelical, it is evangelical, and it must be, because Jesus taught that every text of Scripture designates it and, therefore, every preaching must point it out.
But is explicit preaching in the Bible?Despite the different styles, they all exposed the Word of God to people, reasoning through the scriptures.
We will only preach the Word of God as we proclaim what the scriptures say.
