Verse of the day: But when you pray, enter your room, and when the door is closed, you will pray to your Father, who is secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you (Matthew 6. 6).
A common objection to Christian hedonism is that it places man’s interests above the glory of God, which places my happiness above God’s honor, but Christian hedonism does not do so at all.
- Rest a sure that hedonistic Christians strive to seek our interest and happiness with all our might.
- We support the resolution of young Jonathan Edwards: “I have decided to strive for as much happiness as possible in the world to come.
- With all the power.
- Strength.
- Vigour.
- Vehemence and even violence that I am able to exercise.
- Or that I can lead to exercise.
- In whatever way I think?.
But we learn from the Bible (and Edwards!) May God’s interest be to magnify the fulness of His glory by spreading mercy upon us.
Therefore, the pursuit of our interest and happiness is never above God, but always in God. The most precious truth of the Bible is that God’s greatest interest is to glorify the richness of His grace by making sinners happy in Him.
When we humble ourselves like children and do not cling to ourselves, but run joyfully into the joy of our Father’s embrace, the glory of his grace is magnified and our soul’s desire is satisfied. Our interest and glory are one.
Therefore, Christian hedonists do not place their happiness above the glory of God when they seek happiness in Him.
