Verse of the Day: Have you lived above all in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ? And that you’re not intimidated by your opponents in any way? Because you have received the grace to suffer for Christ and not just to believe in him. (Philippians 1: 27-29)
Paul told the Philippians that living with dignity for the gospel of Christ meant courage in the face of adversaries, and then he gave them the logic of courage.
The logic is this: God has given you two gifts, not one: faith and suffering, that is what verse 29 says.
In this context, this means that both your faith in the face of suffering and your suffering are gifts from God. When Paul said they were not intimidated by opponents, he had two reasons in mind why they should not be afraid:
Therefore, the logic of courage in the face of adversity is this double truth: its adversity and its faith in the face of adversity are gifts of God.
Why is this called living in a “worthy of the gospel of Christ” way?Why is the gospel the good news that the blood of Christ’s covenant has infallibly bought God’s sovereign work for all his people, to attest to us and to rule our enemies?? Always for our eternal good.
So don’t be afraid. Your adversaries can’t do more than God grants, and that will give you the faith you need. These promises are bought and sealed with blood; are promises of the gospel.
