October 9th? Daily devotion CHARLES SPURGEON

Verse of the day: powerful to prevent you from stumbling (Jude 24).

In a sense, the way to heaven is very safe. In other respects, there is no such dangerous path. You are surrounded by difficulties. One wrong step – and how easily we take that step, when grace is absent – and we fall. What a slippery road some of us have to take! How many times do we exclaim like the psalmist: “As for me, however, my feet were almost slipping; Is there little left to divert my steps? (Psalm 73. 2). If we were good climbers, walking safely, we would not be worried about the obstacle. But in ourselves, how weak we are! On the best roads, we soon hesitate; on the nicer trails you stumble quickly. These fragile knees can barely support our rolling weight. A light wind can shake us and a pebble can hurt us. We are scared children taking the first steps on the path of faith. Our Heavenly Father takes us by the hand or we will fall soon. Oh! if we fall upon ourselves, how much we must exalt the patient power that watches over us every day! Think how inclined we are to fall into sin, how inclined we are to choose danger, and how strong our tendency is to fall into discouragement! These thoughts will lead us to sing with more joy than before: Glory to the one who is mighty to keep you from stumbling? (Jude 24). We have many adversaries who are trying to ruin us. Enemies hide, hide, to pounce on us when we least expect them. They are trying to trip us up and throw us off the nearest rock. Only an almighty arm can save us from these invisible enemies who seek to destroy us. This arm is engaged in our defense. He who has promised is faithful and can prevent us from falling. With a deep sense of utter weakness, we have firm confidence in our perfect security. We can say with happy confidence.
