The Great Missionary Hope
Verse of the day: While we were dead in our crimes, [God] gave us life with Christ,?By grace, you’re saved. (Ephesians 2. 5)
- The great missionary hope is that when the gospel is preached in the power of the Holy Ghost.
- God Himself does what man cannot do: he creates the faith that saves; God’s call does what man’s call cannot do; resurrects the dead.
- This creates spiritual life.
- It’s like Jesus’ call to Lazarus in the grave: “Get out!”(John 11:43).
We can awaken someone from sleep with our call, but God’s call calls to things that do not exist to exist (Romans 4:17). God’s call is irresistible because he can overcome any resistance. Such a call is infallibly effective according to God, plan, so that Paul can say, “To those who called, did he also justify?”(Romans 8:30 am).
In other words, God’s call is so effective that it unfailingly creates the faith by which a person is justified. All who are called are justified. But no one is justified without faith (Romans 5. 1). Therefore, God’s call cannot fail in its designated effect. This irresistible call guarantees the faith it justifies.
That’s what man can’t do. That’s impossible. Only God can take away the heart of stone (Ezekiel 36. 26). Only God can attract people to the Son (John 6. 44, 65). Only God can open his heart to respond to the gospel (Acts 16:14). the Good Shepherd knows his sheep by name.
He calls them and they follow Him (John 10:3-4, 14). God’s sovereign grace, making man impossible, is the great missionary hope.
