The Mystery of Marriage
Verse of the day: Therefore, man leaves the father and mother and joins his wife, making the two one flesh (Genesis 2:24).
- When God proposed to create man and woman and instituted the union of marriage.
- He did not cast the dice.
- Draw.
- Or throw a coin to determine how they should relate.
- But formed the marriage very intentionally based on the relationship between his Son and the church.
- Which he had planned for eternity.
So is marriage a mystery?God created the human being, man, and woman, and ordered marriage so that the relationship of eternal covenant between Christ and his church would be represented in conjugal union.
Paul’s conclusion to this mystery is that the roles of husband and wife in marriage are not arbitrarily assigned, but are based on the distinctive roles of Christ and his church.
Those of us who are married must constantly wonder how mysterious and wonderful it is that God in marriage gives us the privilege of representing wonderful divine realities, infinitely larger and better than ourselves.
This is the foundation of paul’s model of love for marriage. It is not enough to say that each spouse must seek his or her own happiness in the joy of the other; it is also important to say that husbands and wives must consciously copy the relationship that God has conceived for Christ and the Church.
I hope you take this seriously, whether you’re single or married, old or young. The revelation of Christ and his church, who keep the covenant, remains in marriage.
