The first priority of prayer
Verse of the day: You will pray thus: Heavenly Father, hallowed be thy name (Matthew 6:9).
- In the Lord’s prayer.
- Jesus teaches that the first priority in prayer is to ask that Heavenly Father’s name be sanctified.
Note that this is a request or a request. This is not a statement (as I have thought for years). It is a call to God for his own name to be sanctified.
It is like the text of Matthew 9:38, where Jesus tells us to pray to the Lord of the sea to send workers to his own future, I am constantly surprised that the workers are responsible for asking the owner of the camp, who he knows better than we do, to add more workers to the field.
But isn’t that the same thing we have here in the Lord’s prayer?Jesus tells us to ask God, who is infinitely jealous of the honor of his own name, to sanctify him?
It may surprise us, but it’s the same. And that teaches us two lessons.
Align your heart with God’s zeal to sanctify his name, and he will pray with great success. May your first and decisive prayer be by the sanctification of God’s name, and your prayers will be joined by the power of God’s zeal.
