October 17th? Daily devotion CHARLES SPURGEON

Verse of the day: But David says to himself, One day I can die at the hands of Saul. (1Amuel 27. 1)

Thinking of David’s heart this time was wrong. He certainly had no reason to think that God’s anointing on him was destined to be abandoned as an empty and meaningless act. Before long, the Lord had left His servant. David was often in dangerous situations; however, there was no time when he did not have deliverance by divine intervention. The tests to which he was exposed were varied. However, on all occasions, the one who sent the judgment also kindly ordered a way to escape. David could not point a finger at any entry in his journal and say, “This is proof that the Lord will abandon me,” because his entire life has proven otherwise. From what God had done for David, David should have understood that God would always be his defender. Do we doubt God’s help in the same way? Isn’t this suspicion without reason? Have we ever had a shadow of reason to doubt the goodness of our Father? Hasn’t your kindness been wonderful? Has he never failed to honor our trust? Oh no! Our God has never left us. We have had dark nights, but the Star of Love shone in the dark. We have lived in a serious conflict, but above our heads it has raised the shield of our defense. We have been through many difficulties. They never came to our detriment, but to our benefit. The conclusion we draw from our past experiences is that the One who was with us in six trials will also be with us in the seventh. What we know about our faithful God proves that he will keep us to the end. So we must not oppose the evidence. How can we be so ungrateful that we doubt our God? Lord, throw the Jezebel of our unbelief to the ground and let the dogs devour it.
