October 12th? Daily devotion CHARLES SPURGEON

Verse of the day: I will ponder your precepts (Psalm 119. 15).

There are times when solitude is better than being in the company of people and silence is wiser than talking. We would be better believers if we spent more time alone, waiting for God and gathering, through meditation on the Scriptures, the spiritual strength to work in his work. We have to meditate on the things of God because that way we get the true nutrition that they can provide us. The truth is like a bunch of grapes. If we want to get wine out of the bunch, we have to crush it and squeeze it several times. Fortunately, the legs of the centrifuge should go over the loops; otherwise the juice will not flow. You must tread the grapes well, otherwise much of the precious liquid will be wasted. Likewise, we must, through meditation, squeeze the bouquet of truth, if we want to draw the wine of consolation out of it. Our bodies are not maintained by just putting food in our mouths. The process that provides energy to muscles, nerves, tendons, and bones is the process of digestion. It is through digestion that the outer food becomes assimilable for the inner life. Our soul is not nourished simply by hearing this or that part of divine truth over and over again. Listening, reading, taking notes and learning are attitudes that require internal digestion to complete their usefulness. The internal digestion of truth, for the most part, is meditating on it. Why do some believers, while listening to many sermons, progress slowly in their spiritual life? Because they neglect their prayer time and don’t meditate closely on the Word of God. They love wheat, but they don’t shred it. They want the ears, but they do not go out to the field to harvest them. The fruit is hanging from the tree, yet they don’t pick it up. Water gushes at their feet, but they do not bend down to drink it. Lord, deliver us from this madness, and such is our decision today: 11M, will I modify your precepts?
