November 14th? CHARLES SPURGEON Daily Devotion

Verse of the day: I will exterminate those who worship the Lord and swear for him and also for Milcom (Sophony 1. 4,5).

These people thought they were safe, because they worshiped both gods. They walked among Jehovah’s disciples and at the same time prostrated themselves before Milcom. However, duplicity is hateful to God. In the ordinary affairs of daily life a man of duplicity is despised, but in Christianity that man is an abomination in the highest degree. The punishment given in these verses is terrible, but well deserved. How can justice not punish the sinner, who knows what is right, approves of it, pretends to follow it and, at the same time, loves evil and gives it dominion over his heart? O my soul, search your heart today and see if you are guilty of duplicity. You claim to be a follower of Jesus, but do you really love him? Is your heart at peace with God? It is of little use to have a good name if I am really dead in my crimes and sins. Standing with one foot in the land of truth and the other in the sea of lies will bring terrible ruin and total ruin. Either Christ is everything or he is nothing. God fills the entire universe, so there is no room for another god. If He reigns in your heart, there is no room for another dominant power. Do you trust only in Jesus and live exclusively for him? Is this the desire of your heart? Is your heart dedicated to this goal? If this is true, blessed be the mighty grace that has brought you to salvation. But if that is not true, Lord, forgive this horrible offense.
