A dangerous reason
Verse of the day: Or who first gave him [God] to return to him?For him, and for him and for him are all things. So for him, eternal glory. (Romans 11: 35-36)
- When it comes to obedience.
- Gratitude is a dangerous reason.
- It tends to express themselves in terms of debtor.
- For example: “Look what God has done for you.
- Shouldn’t you.
- Out of gratitude.
- Do a lot for him?” Or: “You owe God everything you have and have.
- What did you do for him in return?”.
I have at least three problems with that kind of motivation
First, it is impossible to return to God all the grace he has given us. We cannot even begin to return the favor, because Romans 11:35-36 says, “Who gave him [God] first to be restored?[Answer: No one!] For him, and for him, and for him are all things. For him, then, eternal glory? We can’t give him back because he already has everything we have to give him.
Secondly, even if we could return all his grace, we could only turn grace into a business transaction. If we could give it back, it wouldn’t be fun. If some friends try to show you a special favor. of love inviting you to dinner, and you end the evening by saying that you will pay them by inviting them next week, cancel their grace and make an exchange. God is not glad that his grace is annulled. He likes to glorify her. (Ephesians 1. 6, 12, 14).
Third, focusing on gratitude as a cause of obedience tends to ignore the crucial importance of having faith in God’s future grace. Gratitude looks at the grace received in the past and feels grateful. Faith awaits the grace promised in the future and feels hopeful. “Is faith the certainty of the things you expect?(Hebrews 11:1).
This faith in future grace is the reason for obedience that preserves the quality of the grace of human obedience. Obedience is not about giving back to God, thus turning grace into negotiation. Is obedience to trust in God coming for more grace?Infinite dispositions of love and the power of Dios. La look at the promise: will I be with you wherever you go?(see Joshua 1. 9), and obedience is encouraged to take possession of the country.
