July 22nd? Daily devotion CHARLES SPURGEON

Verse of the day: I am your husband. (Jeremiah 3:14)

The Lord Jesus Christ is united to his people in marriage; in love, he married his church as a pure virgin, even before she fell under the yoke of bondage. Filled with intense affection, he worked hard for the church, just as Jacob did. for Raquel, until all the acquisition money was paid. Now, after seeking her by the Holy Spirit and leading her to know and love Him, He awaits this precious hour when mutual bliss will be consumed in the wedding supper of the Lamb.

  • The glorious groom has yet to present his bride.
  • Perfect and complete.
  • To the Majesty of Heaven.
  • She has not yet really entered into her privileges as wife and queen.
  • The bride is still a traveler in a world of affliction.
  • A dweller in the tents of Quedar (see Psalm 120.
  • 5).
  • However.
  • She is.
  • At this moment.
  • The wife.
  • The wife of Jesus.
  • Loved by him.
  • Precious in his eyes.
  • Written in his hands and united to his person.
  • On earth.
  • The Lord Jesus fulfills all the loving duties of the groom for the church.
  • He makes abundant provisions for his needs.
  • Pays off all his debts.
  • Allows him to use his name and share all his wealth.
  • The Lord Jesus will not behave differently with the church.
  • Will you never say the word “divorce” since you hate repudiation? (Malachi 2.
  • 16).
  • Death can break the bond of marital union between the most loving living.
  • But it cannot destroy the bonds of this immortal marriage.
  • In heaven there will be no marriages; its inhabitants will be like the angels of God.
  • Despite this.
  • There is an admirable exception to this rule.
  • Because in heaven Christ and His church will celebrate a joyous marriage.
  • Because this affinity is more enduring.
  • It is more intimate than earthly marriages.
  • While the love of a spouse can be so pure and so strong.
  • It is just a faded painting of the flame burning in the heart of Jesus.
  • This mystical attachment to the Church.
  • By which Christ left his Father and with whom he became one flesh.
  • Goes beyond all human union.
