Joker and Psalm 46

This article contains Spoiler!

Few films rarely deserve to be considered, and no matter how much you write, it will take time to digest your message. Joker’s a movie like that. Something bitter. It’s not going well, if you expect action, heroes or something, forget it, you won’t like it. Joker is a film about the philosophy of aesthetics, which is a blow to the liquid aesthetic of our time, however strange it may seem.

  • Joker can be explored from different angles.
  • Perhaps.
  • This is a deliberate intention.
  • After all.
  • We live in an age that rejects the sense of absolute truth.
  • However.
  • It is possible to see a sword running through the entire narrative of the film.
  • Giving the idea that “man is born good.
  • But society corrupts him.
  • ” It’s a full plate for those who can theorize human existence thrown into social construction to explain how the worst people can be forged by social injustice.
  • (psychiatric) science.
  • The legal system.
  • And the media.
  • That entertain the masses.
  • In the midst of all this mess called Gotham.
  • Emerges.
  • As in a “microphysics of power”.
  • A madman.
  • A bored clown.
  • A tortured by life.
  • Who becomes a hero of the helpless.
  • A symbol.
  • Or rather a metonymy in our time.
  • His main joke is: “I hope my death has more meaning than my life.
  • ” Do you think it’s funny? You’re not laughing.
  • For the Joker.
  • It was the bittersweet joke of his existence.
  • But it was also.
  • Stubbornly.
  • His hope.
  • Hope faded.
  • But it was still her hope.
  • Or rather her religious expression.
  • How ironic! You cannot lose sight of the sense of aesthetics.

The message is this: the city is dying. Gotham can’t save the Joker. There are no heroes, no art, no beauty in a city dominated by the most radical expression of relativism.

Now, after all, why can’t the Joker be a joke?If language is just a game, why can’t a crazy, boring clown, played in life, be a hero with the power to inspire other clowns who decide to take control of the city in search of the liberation of what oppresses them? Our world wants to turn the antithesis of beauty and art, but I still hear the complaint of many who came to see the film: What a nuisance! They said, isn’t that strange? People on the cusp of modernity, which is possessed, full of freedom and knowledge, do not like the city they themselves have built. No, it’s not strange. The aesthetic is stubborn, it is a reflection of the Imago Dei that cannot be extracted from the deeper layers of the heart.

I think now you understand why it’s not so hard to understand why the Joker is so disturbing. It’s a matter of aesthetics, curiously people are always projected into a feeling of beauty outside of theirs and it’s precisely this feeling of beauty that exposes the contradiction of the joy of a clown who should suspend pain for a moment, but, you can’t laugh at a clown who drops a gun from his clothes while trying to distract children with cancer. You can’t laugh at these things, because there’s beauty in the world. It’s not an abstract thing, but real. la beauty is real. As much as postmodern nature tries to put beauty in the field of opinion, it is imposed metaphysically, so it is impossible to look at the Joker and not ask about the meaning of beauty.

The world is ugly! Gotham is ugly! But there is still another city, it will come from above. It is not a social construction, but a gift. A gift of love! The city of God? as Agustín said, in this city not even the madman had been wrong! Have you ever thought about it? Not even the fool had been wrong! The city is dying because men cannot live by themselves. Without God, the city lives in deep anguish. Without the tranquility of God’s love, only death remains to worship on the amorphous altar of liquid modernity. This is terrible, because we already know the misfortune that awaits those who seek supreme joy in things below.

However, in the midst of all this broth of despair, it is possible to proclaim with all the strength that there is redemption in Christ for the people who live in the city. This stubborn sense of aesthetics will only find the right direction if you look. in the sanctuary of the houses of the Most High (Psalm 46). Our sense of aesthetics calls poetry, but it is not only poetry, but poetry of peace:

The Lord of armies is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Come, see the works of the Lord, which ravage the earth. End the war to the ends of the world, break the bow and break the spear; Cars burn in the fire. Shut up and recognize that I am God; I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted on earth (Psalm 46:7-10).

We can have hope beyond death because our Redeemer has suffered the terror of the city of men in our place, has conquered death, and will finally return with the city adorned with the eternal presence of God among men. there will be no more boring jokes, because these words are faithful and true (Rev. 22. 5). Only in the Gospel of Christ can existence, aesthetics and hope be reconciled.

May the Lord help us!
