The Anchor of Joy
Verse of the day: Blessed are you when because of me they insult you, persecute you and, lying, they say all the evil against you (Matthew 5. 11).
- Jesus revealed a secret that protects our happiness from the threat of suffering and the threat of success.
- This secret is: great is your reward in heaven.
- And the sum of this reward is to enjoy the fulness of the glory of Jesus Christ (John 17:24).
It protects our happiness from suffering when it says
Blessed art thou when for my sake they insult you, persecute you, and, lying, tell you all evil; rejoice and rejoice, for what is the value of your reward in heaven?(Matthew 5:11-12).
Our great reward in heaven frees our joy from the threat of persecution and wound.
It also protects our joy at success when it says
“However, rejoice, not because the spirits submit them, but because their name is written in heaven. (Luke 10:20).
The disciples were tempted to place their joy in the success of the ministry. “Do the demons themselves submit to us by name!?(Luke 10:17). But he would separate his joy from his only secure anchor.
Thus, Jesus protects his joy from the threat of success by promising them the great reward of heaven. Rejoice in this: let their names be written in heaven. His legacy is infinite, eternal, and secure.
Our joy is sure. Neither suffering nor success can destroy your anchor. Big is your reward in heaven. His name is written on it. He’s safe.
Jesus anchored the happiness of the Saints who suffered in the reward of heaven and anchored the happiness of the Saints who succeeded in the same reward.
And so he freed us from the tyranny of worldly pain and pleasure
