Do not accumulate other treasures for you on earth, where moths and rust corrode and thieves dig and steal; but it gathers other treasures in the sky, where it does not erode, where rust does not oxidize and where thieves do not dig or steal; for where your treasure is, there will also be your heart (Matthew 6:19-21).
In this video, the last of the series? The God Present ?, DA Carson invites us to examine our hearts to see if our treasure is in paradise (in the new heaven and new earth, in the life to come) or on earth (in this life, which will soon pass ).
- In the Sermon on the Mountain recorded in Matthew 5.
- 6.
- And 7.
- Jesus said that we should not collect treasures for ourselves in the country where moths and rust corrode.
- Where thieves dig and steal.
- Or where the bag can swallow.
- But we must collect treasures in the sky where moth and rust do not corrode.
- Where thieves cannot dig or steal.
- And where the bag has no effect.
- And then add an amazing and important phrase: “Because where your treasure is.
- So is your heart.
- “.
Look at what he says carefully. It doesn’t say, “keep your heart. “It says “choose your treasure. ” There are other places where we are told to keep our hearts. “Keep your heart, because that’s where the sources of life come from,” yes, there are texts like this. But this passage from the Sermon on the Mountain is not what Jesus says. What it says is: Your heart will follow your treasure, so choose your treasure wisely.
In other words, if what you enjoy most has to do with the treasures here on earth; things that can be good in themselves, to be thanked for, things to appreciate; However, if this is the whole horizon of your treasure, that’s where your heart will go.
Heart? Now, not in a romantic or emotional sense so often in the Bible, the heart has to do with the core of the human being, it is who you are, what you think, what you appreciate. And if what you enjoy there has to do with everything in this life and that’s it, that’s where your heart, your imagination, your energy, where your creative imagination goes, that’s what you think, that’s what you expect; and perhaps, if you are a Christian, there is a kind of profound but insignificant confessional level, you also believe in these new heavens and this new earth, but that means nothing of how you live, because your heart has its treasures here.
If, on the other hand, although you appreciate all the good things god gives us in this life, and there are so many, but still, what you enjoy most has to do with new heavens and the new earth, that’s where your imagination will go, that’s where your energies go, that’s where your heart goes.
