How and why did God create us? ? New Town Catechism (4/52)

Question 4: How and why did God create us?

God created us male and female in his image to know him, love him, live with him, and glorify him. It is very correct that if we were created by God, we live for his glory.

And God created man in his image; in the image of God he created it; man and woman created them.

The glory of God is the first thing that the children of God should desire. This is the object of one of our Lord’s prayers: “Father, does your name glorify? (Jn 12,28). This is the purpose for which the world was created. This is the end for which the saints are called and converted. This is the main objective that we must seek, “that in everything God be glorified by Jesus Christ” All by which we can glorify God, a talent, our gifts, our influence, money, knowledge, health, strength, time, senses, sanity , intellect, memory, ailments, privileges as members of the Church of Christ, our advantages as holders of the Bible? everything, all this is talent. Where do these things come from? What hand did he give them? Why are we what we are? Why are we not the worms that crawl through the earth? There is only one answer to these questions. Everything we have was borrowed from God. We are the guardians of God. We are in debt to God. May this thought penetrate deep into our hearts!

JOHN PIPER

Why do people take pictures? They make pictures to imagine. They want to create images that show something. If you are making a statue of Napoleon, you want people to think less of the statue than of Napoleon. You make the statue so that it has a specific characteristic of the character of Napoleon.

So God created us in his own image. We could argue whether it is our rationality, our morality or our will that makes us in his image. The fact is that he made us human beings in his image to reflect the image of something, that is, his. Our existence is to show the existence of God or, more precisely, to show the glory of God. Do I think it means the multiple perfections of God? the brilliance, the splendor, the brilliance of its beautiful and multicolored perfections. We want to think, live, act and speak to call attention to the many perfections of God. I think the best way to do this is when we are completely satisfied with these perfections. They mean more to us than money and more than fame, more than sex or anything else that can compete for our affection. When people see us valuing God in this way, and his glory as something that satisfies us, they see him as our treasure. Show me more! I think that’s what it means to glorify God for being created in his image.

The place where glory is most clearly displayed is the gospel in which Christ dies; the Son of God dies for sinners. I say this because in 2Co 4. 4 it says that “the god of this age (that is, Satan) has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, does not shine on Do you want to know where the glory of God shines brightest? It shines most vividly in Christ in the gospel. So if we are to be fully conformed to His image and demonstrate His glory to others, there is a verse just before this that says: Reflecting the glory of the Lord like a mirror, we are transformed from glory to glory in the same image, as by the Spirit of God. Lord? (2 Cor 3. 18). It comes from the Spirit.

So we turn to Jesus, we treasure him, we love him, and we are molded in his image.

When God says he created us for this, male and female, it doesn’t just mean that we want generations to keep doing this so that there is procreation here; it also means doing better in the community. It’s not good for the man to be alone. In whom would you glorify God? This small community created at the beginning as man and woman represents the community in which the glory of God radiates to each other and then to the world.

Let’s do this together. We will help each other to glorify God

Creator of everything, help us not to lose sight that, like any human being that you have created, we were created in your image. Never doubt it. Never allow us to doubt this about another man or woman, because it denies the glory that is due to your name. Your image seen in us testifies that we belong to you, body and soul. Amen.
