Verse of the Day: Our God is in heaven and does what He wants (Psalm 115. 3).
This verse teaches that every time God acts, He does so in a way that pleases him.
- God is never forced to do something He hates; he is never forced to make his only recourse to do something he hates.
He does what he wants. And so, in a way, he likes everything he does.
This must lead us to prostration before God and the praise of his sovereign freedom, because, in a sense, he always acts in freedom, according to his “good will”, according to the precepts of his own pleasures.
God never becomes a victim of circumstance. He is never forced into a situation where he has to do something he cannot rejoice in, he is not frustrated. He’s not trapped, cornered or coerced.
Even at the time in history when God did what, in a sense, was the hardest thing to achieve for him, when?Didn’t you forgive your own Son? (Romans 8. 32), God was free and did what He wanted. Paul says that Jesus’ sacrifice in death was?As an offering and sacrifice to God, in a sweet fragrance?(Ephesians 5. 2). The Father liked the greatest sin, the most imminent death, and God’s most difficult act.
And on the way to Calvary, Jesus himself had legions at his disposal: “No one takes it away from me, on the contrary, do I give it spontaneously?(John 10:18)? Of his own goodwill, by the joy of which he was proposed (Hebrews 12:2). At the only time in the history of the universe when Jesus seemed trapped, he was totally in control, doing exactly what he loved: dying to justify evil people like you and me.
So let’s be admired and surprised. And we tremble, for not only our praises of God’s sovereignty, but also our salvation through christ’s death for us, depend on it: “In heaven is our God and all that pleases him”.
