Radical effects of the resurrection
Verse of the day: If our hope in Christ is limited only to this life, we are the most unhappy of all men (1 Corinthians 15:19).
- Paul concludes from his constant dangers.
- His daily death.
- And his struggle against beasts that the life he chose following Jesus is foolish and unhappy if he does not rise from the dead.
If death was the end of it all, he said, “Eat and drink, that tomorrow we will die?”(1 Corinthians 15:32). That doesn’t mean we’re all greedy and drunk. Are they so unhappy? With or without the resurrection. Paul means: if there is no resurrection, what makes sense is moderation to maximize earthly pleasures.
However, this is not what Paul chooses, He chooses suffering, because He chooses obedience. During his conversion, when Ananiah approached him with the words of the Lord Jesus: “Will I show you how important it is for you to suffer by my name?(Acts 9:16), Paul accepted this as part of his call.
How could Paul do that? The answer is given in 1 Corinthians 15:20: “But in fact Christ rose from the dead, being the principle of those who sleep. “In other words, Christ was resurrected and I will be resurrected with him. Therefore, no suffering for Jesus is in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).
The hope of the resurrection radically changed Paul’s way of life, freed him from materialism and consumerism, gave him the power to live without the things that many people think he needs in this life, for example, although he had the right to marry (1 Corinthians 9:5), he renounced this pleasure because he was called to endure much suffering.
This is how Jesus said that the hope of the resurrection must change our behavior. For example, he told us to invite people who can’t pay us in this life. How are we motivated to do that? But will you receive your reward in the resurrection of the righteous?(Luke 14. 14).
It is a radical call for us to examine our present lives to see if they are shaped by the hope of the resurrection. Are we making profit-based decisions in this world or the world to come? Will we take a chance on a love that can only be possible?considered wise if there is a resurrection?
May God help us to dedicate ourselves again, throughout our lives, so that the resurrection may have its radical effects.
