IN PSALM 95. 3, the Psalmist exclaims by faith that “The Lord is the Supreme King”. That’s an incredible statement! Here, the man of God makes a majestic statement about God and thus shows his knowledge of God and how he relates to him; with this, the Psalmist indicates the core and core of theology: the knowledge of God and communion with him. The most important theme of theology is the search for an understanding of who God is and what his character is. John Calvin argued that knowledge of true doctrine implies the knowledge of God and that this correct knowledge of God is what produces a solid faith in the heart of the human being.
But is it possible to know God? The distance between God and man is so immense that it seems insurmountable. Isaiah 40. 12-28 speaks of this distance between God and men. In a sense, God is incomprehensible, because it will never be possible for man to know God completely. Calvin explained this impossibility with the expression “finitum non capax infinitum”, showing that the finite cannot assimilate the infinite, but God, in the goodness and love of men, reveals himself. He decided to make himself known to human beings. God used human language and by grace came down to the level of men, telling them who he is. But he did more. He descended to the level of men by becoming men in Christ Jesus. In Christ, by faith, by the word revealed in the Scriptures, God can be known. In Christ, by faith, through the revealed Scriptures, God can be loved and we can enjoy fellowship and abundant life with him. In Christ, by faith, we can react like the psalmist and, contemplating all we can know about God, we exclaim with joy and delight: The Lord is the supreme King.
