- When we talk about Christianity.
- We probably call it more.
- The Christian faith? ‘Christian religion’.
- This is appropriate.
- Because the concept of faith is fundamental to the Christian.
- Because faith is at the center of the biblical vision of redemption.
- However.
- Faith is a multifaceted concept and Christians struggle to understand exactly what faith is.
In this book, I want to explore the nature of faith as defined in the Bible. We will focus on how faith relates to our salvation and discuss the elements necessary for what we call “saving faith. “We will also examine how faith relates to reason and examine other problems we encounter in the Bible with respect to this concept.
In the Bible, the most fundamental definition of faith is found in the Hebrews: “Faith is the certainty of the things that are expected, the conviction of the facts that are not seen. Because, by faith, did the elders gain a good testimony? The distinction that the author of Hebrews makes between faith and hope. These ideas are closely linked, but they are nonetheless different. Similarly, Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13, about the great triad of Christian virtues: faith, hope, and love. The passage also reveals that there is a distinction between faith and hope.
Before exploring the connection between these concepts, let me talk about the biblical idea of hope, because in the New Testament the word hope works differently than it does in Western countries today. When we use the word hope, we are often referring to an emotional state of longing, in our heart, for what we would like to see happen in the future, but we are not sure if that will happen. We can expect our favorite teams to win sports championships, but that hope may never come true. For example, I am a constant fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and regularly expect the Steelers to win their football games. It can be a useless and useless hope, because it is anything but a certainty. There is a kind of hope that we are not ashamed of (cf. Rm 5. 5), but I constantly fear that my hopes for the Steelers will embarrass me, because if they win championships, they lose games. However, when the Bible speaks of hope, it is not referring to the desire for an uncertain future outcome, but rather to the desire for a future outcome that is completely certain. Based on our confidence in God’s promises, we can be completely sure of the result. When God gives his people a promise of the future, and the church takes it for herself, is that hope known as “the anchor of the soul”? (Hebrews 6:19). An anchor is what protects a ship from floating aimlessly in the sea. God’s promises for tomorrow are the anchor for believers today.
When the Bible says this, is faith the certainty of the things that are expected?(Heb 11. 1? Emphasis added) Is this something that has consistency or importance?something of extreme value. The implication is that faith communicates the essence of hope. In a real sense, hope is the faith you expect. The word faith has a strong element of trust. If my hope is based on something that God says will happen in the future, my hope for the future promise derives its substance from my trust in who made the promise. I can hope because I have faith Dios. Si cannot trust in God’s promise for tomorrow, my hope is foundationful; my hope is not just a chimera, a fantasy or a projection of desire that rests on useless dreams. Rather, it’s based on something that has substance.
