In Romans 1:18, Paul teaches that all men, without exception, deserve to be punished by God. “The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all wickedness and perversion of men who regard the truth as injustice. ” If all men have “free will”, while all without exception are under the wrath of God, is this “free will” followed? guiding them in one direction? of “wickedness and iniquity. ” So what is the power of free will? helping them to do the right thing? If there really is “free will”, it does not seem that it can help men to achieve salvation, since it leaves them under the wrath of God. Some people, however, accuse me of not following Paul very closely. They affirm that his words, “Against all wickedness and perversion of men who uphold the truth out of injustice?” they do not mean that all human beings, without exception, are guilty in the eyes of God. They argue that the text implies that some people “do not believe that the truth is an injustice. ” However, Paul used a typical Hebrew construction, which leaves no doubt that he was referring to the wickedness of all men. Also, notice what Paul wrote just before these words. In verse 16, Paul declares that the gospel is “the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. ” This means that without the power of God granted by the gospel, no one would have the strength within himself to turn to God. Paul goes on to say that this applies to both Jews and Gentiles. The Jews knew the divine laws in great detail, but this did not save them from being under the wrath of God. The Gentiles enjoyed admirable cultural advantages, but this in no way brought them closer to God. There were Jews and Gentiles who did their best to resolve their situation before God, but despite all its advantages and “free will”, they completely failed. Pablo did not hesitate to condemn them all. Notice also that in verse 17, Paul says that “the righteousness of God is revealed. ” Therefore, God shows his justice to men. But it is not stupid. If men did not need divine help, he would not waste his time providing that help. The conversion of any person occurs when God comes to them and overcomes their ignorance by revealing the truth of the gospel. Without him, no one could ever be saved. No one in the history of mankind has conceived for himself the reality of God’s wrath as we are taught in the Scriptures. No one has ever dreamed of establishing peace with God through the life and work of a Savior, the man-God, Jesus Christ. In fact, what is happening is that the Jews rejected Christ, despite all the teaching their prophets gave them. It seems that self-righteousness earned by some Jews or pagans has led them to stop seeking divine righteousness by faith, to do things their own way. So how much more? Free will? test, the worst things get.

First chapter of the book? Born Slave ?, by Martinho Luther, published by Editora Fiel.

Luther saw at will the doctrine of slavery as the cornerstone of the gospel and the true foundation of the Christian faith. In Nascido Escravo, summary of his short book, “Slavery of the Will”, we have a clear and definitive rebuttal of the arguments in favor of free will presented by Erasme in his defense of the humanist position of the Roman Catholic Church.
