[Don’t waste your 2010] Jonathan Edwards? 70 resolutions (Part I)

As was common among the youth of his day, Jonathan Edwards wrote a list of resolutions, pleding to live a TEOCENETRIC life in harmony with others. This list was probably drawn up in 1722 and grew over the years as new resolutions were added. The list has a total of 70 resolutions.

Aware that I cannot do anything without God’s help, I humbly pray you, by his grace, to allow me to faithfully fulfill these resolutions, while you are in His will, in the name of Jesus Christ.

  • 1.
  • I have resolved to do all that is for the greatest glory of God and for my own good.
  • Profit and pleasure.
  • Throughout the time of my pilgrimage.
  • Never taking into account the time it will take me.
  • Neither now nor for eternity.
  • I have decided that I will do what I believe is my duty and that it will benefit humanity in general.
  • No matter how many or how many difficulties it faces.

2. I have decided to remain in the continuous search for new ways to promote the resolutions mentioned above.

3. I have resolved to repent if I ever become less responsible for these resolutions, neglecting a small part of one of them and admitting each failure individually as soon as I can think of.

4. I have also resolved never to deny any difficult way or thing, whether in body or soul, less or more, leading to the glorification of God; don’t suffer either if you can avoid it.

5. I have resolved not to waste a single moment of my time; on the contrary, I will always look for ways to make the most of it.

6. I have decided to live with all my might as long as I live

7. I decided never to do anything I wouldn’t do if I knew I was living the last hour of my life.

8. I have decided to be at all levels, both speaking and doing, as if there was no one more vile than me on earth, as if I had committed those same sins myself or if I had simply suffered the same weaknesses and failures as everyone else. ; Nor will I ever allow him to know the sins of others to bring me more than shame and the opportunity to confess my own sins and misery to God.

9. I have decided to reflect and meditate greatly at all times on my own death and on the circumstances related to death.

10. I have resolved, whenever I feel and feel pain, to relate it to the pains of martyrdom and also to those of hell.

11. I have resolved that every time I think of an enigma about salvation, I do everything immediately to resolve it and understand it, if no circumstance prevents me.

12. As soon as I feel a minimum of gratification or pleasure in pride or vanity, I resolved to remove it immediately.

13. I have resolved never to stop looking for specific objects for my charity and generosity.

14. I have resolved never to do anything in the form of revenge

15. I have never resolved to suffer the slightest expression of anger on the part of irrational beings.

16. I have resolved never to speak ill of anyone, in such a way as to affect the honour of the person concerned, nor for more or less honor, under any pretext or circumstance, unless he can promote a good that can bring with him benefit.

17. I decided to live as if I were still living my last breath

18. I have resolved to live in such a way, at any time, according to my best standards of private holiness and those times when I have a greater foresight about the content of the whole gospel and the perception of the world to come.

19. I resolved never to do anything I was afraid to do an hour before the sound of the last trumpet.

20. I have decided to keep the strictest temperance in everything I eat and drink.

21 I have resolved never to do anything that can be seen as a good opportunity to despise or even to misunderstand someone whose wickedness is perceived.

22. Ai resolved to strive for all the good possible for me in the world to come, all that I can accomplish from there, with all my might in God: power, vigour, vehemence, inner violence, all that I can apply and warn. myself in any way I can think and perceive.

23 I have resolved to take a deliberate and immediate action every time I realize that this can be taken for the glory of God, and that it may refer to God, his original intention over us, his original purpose, and his purpose. it will serve exclusively the glory of God, I will repudiate such a thing and consider it an obvious violation of the fourth resolution.

24 I have decided that every time I begin and fall into a path of lust and evil, I go back and find its origin in me, all that comes from me is such a thing, then begin with caution, and never do the same again, pray and fight on my knees, and with all my might against the origin of such deeds.
