[DEVOTIONAL] John Piper? When they’re the wind

When they are sad, in pain and desperate, people say things that they would not say in other circumstances. They paint reality in darker tones than those that will paint it tomorrow when the sun rises. These people sing in low notes and speak as if that is the only melody. They only see clouds and speak as if there is no sky.

Such people say, “Where is God?” Or: “There’s no profit to go on living” OR: “Nothing makes sense. “Or: “There is no hope for me” OR: “If God were good, wouldn’t this have happened?”

What are we going to do with those words?

Job said we don’t have to disapprove of those words. It’s the wind or literally for the wind. Such words will disappear quickly. There will be a change of circumstance, and the desperate person will wake up from the darkness of the night and repent of the hasty words.

Therefore, let us not waste our time and energy in disapproval of such words, they will disappear alone, in the wind. It is not necessary to prune the leaves in autumn; it’s a futile effort. They will soon extend to the four winds.

At what speed are we willing to defend God?In front of words that are only said in the wind. There are many words, premeditated and thoughtful, that require our disapproval, but we must not respond to all the desperate. heresies, he said without thinking for hours of agony. If we had discernment, we could see the difference between deep words and words bliss in the wind.

There are words that are rooted in deep mistakes and evils, but not all gray words derive their color from black hearts, some are colored mainly by pain, by despair, what you hear are not the deepest things of the heart, there is something real. about us, where do words come from, but it is temporary? as a transient and painful infection; but you’re not the real person.

Let us learn to discern whether the words that are said against us, against God and against the truth are said only in the wind, not of the soul, but of suffering. If these are words said in the wind, let us wait in silence and not restore the soul, not rebuke suffering, it is the purpose of our love.
