[DEVOTIONAL] John Piper? Tolerating atheism

The Church exists to “spread the passion of God’s supremacy in all things, for the joy of the people. “That’s our mission. It all means business, work, education, media, sports, arts, recreation, government and all the details of our lives. This means that God must be recognized and believed supreme by all the people He created. , teaches us that there will never be time, before Jesus’ return, when everyone will honor God as supreme (2 Tes. 1-6).

So how do we express our passion for God’s supremacy in a pluralistic world, in which most people do not recognize God as an important part of their lives, let alone an important part of government, education, business, work, the arts, recreation, or entertainment? Here are five ways:

  • 1.
  • At all times to maintain the conviction that God is ever present and gives all the most important meaning.
  • Is the creator.
  • The supporter and the governor of all things.
  • We must keep in mind the truth that all things exist to reveal something.
  • Of God’s infinite perfections.
  • The full meaning of everything from shoelaces to spaceships is how these things relate to God.

2. In all circumstances, trust that God will use His wisdom and administrative, creative and united power so that all things work together for the good of those who love you. It is faith in the future grace that God will be for us all that he promises to be, in Christ Jesus.

3. Make decisions that reveal God’s supreme worth over what the world values most. Better is God’s grace than life (Psalm 63:3). Therefore, we prefer death to the loss of sweet communion with God. It will show its supremacy over all that life has to offer.

4. Talk to people about God’s supreme dignity, creatively and persuasively. Tell people how they can be reconciled with God by Christ so that they can enjoy God’s supremacy as protection and help, rather than fearing it as judgment.

5. Make it clear that God Himself is the foundation of his commitment to a pluralistic democratic order, not because pluralism is God’s ideal, but because, in a fallen world, legal coercion will not produce the kingdom of God. -Christian beliefs (including naturalistic and materialistic beliefs), not because a commitment to God’s supremacy is irrelevant, but because such a commitment must be spontaneous, otherwise it will not be worthy. We have a theomentric basis for tolerating atheism. “If my kingdom were of this world, would my ministers fight for me?(Jn 18:36). Does the fact that God establishes his kingdom by the miracle of faith, and not by the force of firearms, means that believers will not approve coercive governments this time?Christian or lay people.

That is why we resist the coercive secularization implicit in laws that suppress Christian activities in public places; we do not resist because we want to make Christianity the law of the country; this is fundamentally impossible, because of the spiritual nature of the kingdom. on the contrary, we resist because repression of the free exercise of religion and persuasion is as bad against believers as against the laity; we believe that this tolerance is rooted in the very nature of the gospel of Christ. Tolerance is pragmatic: freedom and democracy seem to be the best political order that men have invented, but for believers, tolerance is not purely pragmatic Is the relational and spiritual nature of the kingdom of God the foundation of our approval of pluralism?until Christ comes with rights and authority that we don’t have.

We spread the passion for God’s supremacy in all things, not by coercion, but by shameful conviction; let us preserve the form of government in which faith can be expressed freely, forced, or suffocated by the sight of a weapon. .
