[DEVOTIONAL] John Piper? Today’s Mercy for Today’s Problems

Part of the saving faith is the security that tomorrow we will have faith. To trust in Christ today is to believe that He will give you the confidence of tomorrow, when tomorrow will come. We often feel that our reserve of forces will not be enough for another day and, in fact, it will not be. Today’s resources are for today; and part of that resource is the confidence that tomorrow we will be given new resources.

The foundation of this security is the wonderful biblical teaching that God determines for each day only the number of problems that this day is able to endure. In no day will God allow his children to be tested beyond what his mercy will last for that day. This is what Paul meant in 1 Corinthians 10:13: “No evidence came upon them that is not common to man; God is faithful and will not allow them to be tested beyond what they can bear, but with evidence, will He also provide the means to escape, so that they can bear it?(author translation).

  • The old Swedish anthem? It is based on Deuteronomy 33.
  • 25:?Will it be your strength like your days? (ARCO).
  • The anthem gives us the same security:.

Day after day and with every moment that passes

I find the strength to face my ordeal;

Trusting in the wise gift of my Father,

I have no reason to be afraid or uneasy

My father’s gift? And more problems:

He whose heart is immensely good,

With love, give your share of pleasure and pain

And, every day, what do you think is the best gift?

Mix intense work with peace and rest

With the measure of pain for each day, He gives us new mercy. This is the argument of Lamentations 3, 22-23: “The Lord’s mercy is the cause that it is not consummated, for his mercy is infinite; are renewed every morning. What’s your loyalty?

God’s mercies are new every morning, because there is enough mercy for every day. That’s why we tend to despair when we think we can or perhaps we should take on tomorrow’s burdens with today’s resources. God wants us to be aware that we can’t. Today’s mercies are for today’s problems; tomorrow, for tomorrow’s troubles.

Sometimes we wonder if we will feel sorry for standing firm in terrible trials. Yes, we will. Peter said, “If by the name of Christ you are insulted, blessed are you, why do the Spirit of glory and God rest upon you?(1 Ped 4. 14). When we are wounded, the Spirit of glory manifests itself. This happened to Stephen when he was stoned (Acts 7. 55-60) It will happen to you, when the Spirit and glory are necessary, arise.

Mana in the desert was administered once a day; there was no stored mana. This is how we should depend on God’s mercy. You don’t get the strength today to carry tomorrow’s burdens. Have mercy today on today’s problems. Tomorrow, mercy will be renewed: “Faithful is God, for whom ye have been called to the communion of his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord?(1:1. 9)”. Faithful is he who calls you, and He will also act!”(1 Ts 5. 24? Author translation).
