[DEVOTIONAL] John Piper? The source of mental health: to be healed through the knowledge of God

The source of mental health: being healed by knowing God

Don’t help people feel happy on the way to hell

  • The most common remedy for most mental and behavioral disorders today is a form of improvement of personal dignity.
  • Which permeates our educational institutions.
  • The psychotherapy and counselling system.
  • The motivation and human resources industry.
  • Advertising and even the church.
  • I present here a letter I wrote to a man.
  • Clarifying the following statement: “It is profoundly wrong to turn the cross into a guarantee of self-esteem as a source of mental health.
  • “I call this man Aquila.

Dear Aquila

1. In my sentence (“Is it profoundly wrong to turn the cross into a guarantee of self-esteem as a source of mental health?”, the key phrase is “The Source of Mental Health”. I think it’s pretty bad I say that being loved by God brings mental health, if what does anyone mean by being loved?Should I have main self-esteem? If the words? To be loved?they mean “I’m kind” or “I’m worthy of love” or “God doesn’t like to refuse. “

This causes two errors. The first is that this concept ignores the reality, glory, wonder, and spontaneity of grace, which implies God’s absolute resolve to love who He wants and to raise stones for Abraham’s children, if He wants to show us that these stones will fulfill The other mistake is to denigrate the indescribably great experience of God’s love inherent in himself , because this experience does not mean an endorsement of my own dignity. As I see things, loving God is a gift from God that allows me to see him, be with him, and enjoy him forever. If I try to receive this precious and divine gift and pretend it makes me happy, because it helps me feel good about myself, something is wrong.

However, in saying that the source of mental health is not self-esteem, but to enjoy God, as God, and his free grace, as a grace, I am not saying that there is no truth in the concept of human worth. (although I struggle with the phrase “personal dignity” as the word “personal” seems to take the subject beyond what the Bible teaches. )Jesus said that we have more courage than birds (Matthew 6. 26). I understand this in feeling that human beings ultimately have a unique ability to enjoy God, like God, and to reflect His glory and dignity in a way that no other creature can do. Therefore, the value of the human being is the potential that God gives us. consider it precious, appreciate it, value it and appreciate it, as well as its way of acting.

3. Do we have to believe that we are “perfectable” in order to expect paradise properly? It all depends on what this improvement means and who does it. Does God himself sanctify you in everything??1 Thessaloniki 5:23). And the word?Perfect? Does it mean perfectly qualified, fit and complete to delight in God, with all the energy and purity with which he pleases himself (?So that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I may be in them?) John 17. 26).

4. Should we tell an abandoned person that they have great “personal dignity” when they feel like a failure and wasted? (First, it is good to reject the term “personal dignity” as it is so overloaded with a psychologically fulfilling, human-centered worldview that it will probably not be helpful in communicating what it means. Actually, a centralized sense of importance in God). As you have so aptly pointed out, the issue is trust. Has God failed in this relationship? Did you make a mistake by making this person uneducated, nervous, blind, short, fat, mediocre, or without an athletic body? I think going through self-esteem therapy immediately misleads a lot of people and leaves the real problem unsolved, while perhaps helping people to feel good, because they are someone (and we only use God to support this). The question is, do you love God in a way that satisfies you enough to move on? Do you trust God’s goodness, wisdom, power, and wealth to help you do what you need to do? Do you rejoice in God because you have the sublime privilege of knowing and being loved by him? Or should they have a vision of glory that echoes their own worth, before receiving help from that vision?

I do not deny or conceal the fact that it is wonderfully significant to know God and be used by Him, to make Him know and love others. There are times when I say this and I do it in a way that clearly shows that the Wonder of all this lies in the preciousness of knowing God, of reflecting him well enough, through my pleasure in Him, that others can see his dignity in me and join me in enjoying it. Therein lies the true meaning!

I hope you can see and feel the world in which my thoughts flow. The question is, what is the source of mental health? My answer is: God. O:see God as God and appreciate Him as God; and that means being forgiven by Him and being gracefully accepted with totally free. I think these truths are undermined when used to make self-esteem the source of mental health. The way to make people happy on the road to hell is not fundamental enough for me.

You’ve helped me a lot. Thank you

Pastor John
