[DEVOTIONAL] John Piper? Are you a descendant of King David?

Are you a descendant of King David?

Meditation on Psalms 18. 50 and Isaiah 55. 3

  • It is he who gives great victories to his king and uses his goodness towards his anointed.
  • David and his posterity.
  • Forever.

I will make a perpetual covenant, composed of the faithful mercy promised to David.

Take a deep breath and think of your place on the throne of King David, the great king of Israel in ancient times. Are Christians really the heirs to the promises made to David and his descendants? In Psalm 18. 50, David said, “He is the one who gives great victories to his king and uses his goodness to his anointed, David, and his posterity, forever. “Can Christians, three thousand years later, read these words and recognize that they are included in the promise of victory and kindness?

Consider Isaiah 55. This chapter begins with an extensive invitation: “Ah!All of you who are thirsty, come to the waters; And you who have no money, come, buy, and eat; yes, come shopping, no money and no money. price, wine and milk? (v. 1). This invitation includes all those who will come to God hungry, thirsty, ruined, and ready to be satisfied in grace, rather than being satisfied in the world and in riches. 3, Addressing the same group, Isaiah said, Bow thy ears, and come unto me; Listen, and your soul will live; Why would I make a perpetual covenant with you, consisting of the faithful mercy promised to David?Note: this covenant is Promised to all those who, hungry and thirsty, approach God for satisfaction. Besides, does this alliance include? Faithful mercy? God ‘promised David’.

Therefore, it is true that humble and hungry saints are the beneficiaries of the promises made to King David, how is this achieved three thousand years later?

Well, God foreseed that the promises made to David would be fulfilled by a “Son of David,” who would be the “Anointed”?From God, that is, the Messiah (see Psalm 18. 50, quoted above). David would be the throne of the universe, and would the government that would spring from that throne be eternal?Because we were born a child, we were given a child; the government is on their shoulders; and his name will be: wonderful counselor, strong God, father of eternity, prince of peace?(Isaiah 9:6) This was the message God sent david, through the prophet Nathan: “I will be his father and he will be my son; Will I not leave my mercy, but will I confirm it in my house and in my kingdom forever, and your throne will be established forever?(1 Chronicles 17: 13-14).

The New Testament proclaims that Jesus is this Messiah, this “Son of David”. “Am I, Jesus, the root and generation of David, the shining star of the morning?(Revelation 22:16). This was the heart of The Apostles’ Preaching: “However, Saul strengthened and confused the Jews who lived in Damascus, demonstrating that Jesus is the Christ?”(Acts 9:22).

And how do we, as believers, relate to this? The son of David, the last king upon whom the eternal government of this world now rests? In a rare phrase, Hebrews 2:13 quotes the Messiah by saying this message to his people: “Here I am and the children that God has given me. “In other words, the disciples of Jesus, the Messiah, the “Son of David”, the eternal king, are his children, his descendants. This is similar to Galatians 3. 7, where Paul said, “Know that those who have faith are the children of Abraham. “In other words, faith unies us with Christ, the descendant of Abraham (Galatians 3:16). And through this union, we have become the children of Abraham and the beneficiaries of the promises God has made for Also, faith unies us to the “Son of David” so that we may be sons of David and beneficiaries of his promises.

This means that Psalm 18. 50 applies, in fact, to us. “Is he the one who gives great victories to his king and uses his goodness to his anointed, David, and his posterity, forever?(Psalm 18. 50). In Christ, we are David’s posterity, the great victories are ours. Kindness is ours. The “faithful mercies promised to David?”(Isaiah 55. 3) are ours. And, to leave us completely ecstatic, the King promises, “To the victor, do you give him to sit with me on my throne, just as I also won and sat with my Father on his throne?(Revelation 3. 21).
