The supernatural star of Bethlehem
Verse of the day: Where is the newborn King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the East and came to worship him (Matthew 2. 2).
- The Bible repeatedly baffles our curiosity about how certain things happened.
- Star?Did the wizards of the East go to Jerusalem?.
It is not said that the star guided them or followed them before them. It is only said that they saw him in the East (verse 2) and that they went to Jerusalem. And how did this star preced them on the short journey of about five miles from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, as verse 9 says? And how did a star stop?
The answer is: we don’t know. There are countless efforts to explain it in terms of conjunctions of planets, comets, supernovae or miraculous lights, we just don’t know. And I want to urge you not to worry about developing theories that, in the end, are only temporal and have very little spiritual relevance.
I dare a generalization to warn you: people who are busy and concerned about such things? How did the star act, how did the Red Sea open, how did mana fall, how Jonah survived on the fish, and how did the moon come out?Do they turn to blood? They are usually people who have what I call the peripheral mentality Don’t you see in them a deep appreciation for the great central things of the gospel? The holiness of God, the horror of sin, the inability of man. , the death of Christ, justification only by faith, the sanctifying work of the Spirit, the glory of Christ’s return and the final judgment. These people always seem to take you to a detour with a new article or book. There is little joy in what is central.
But what is clear in this star question is that she is doing something she cannot do for herself: guide the wizards to the Son of God to worship him.
There is only one person in biblical thought who can be behind this intentionality in the stars: God Himself.
So the lesson is clear: God brings strangers to Christ to love Him and, to achieve this goal, exercises a global influence and power, probably even universal.
Luke shows that God influences the entire Roman Empire so that the census is conducted at the exact moment to take a virgin to Bethlehem, so that the prophecy may be fulfilled with his arrival Matthew shows that God influences the stars of heaven to lead foreign wizards to Bethlehem so that they can worship Jesus.
That’s the purpose Dieu. Il he did at the time. He always does it now. Your goal is for nations, all nations (Matthew 24. 14), to love your Son.
It is God’s will for everyone in his office at work, in his neighborhood, and at home. As John 4:23 says, “Why does the Father seek his worshippers?”
At the beginning of Matthew, we always have a “come and see” model, but in the end, the model is “go to”. The wizards came and saw. We have to go and say.
What is no different, however, is that God’s plan is to unite nations to worship his Son. Christ’s exaltation in the fervent worship of all nations is why the world exists.
