The long-awaited visit
Verse of the day: Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel, because He visited and redeemed his people, and brought us complete and powerful salvation in the house of David, his servant, as he had promised, from ancient times, by mouth. of his holy prophets, to deliver us from our enemies and from the hands of all who hate us (Luke 1:68-71).
Notice two impressive things about these words of Zechariah in Luke 1.
First, nine months earlier, Zechariah could not believe that his wife had a child; now, filled with the Holy Spirit, he is so confident in God’s redemptive work in the coming Messiah that he expresses it in the past. Faith, an act promised by God is as true as if it had already been done. Zechariah has learned to accept the word of God and therefore has impressive security: “God has visited and redeemed!”(Lk 1:68).
Second, is the coming of Jesus, the Messiah, a visit from God to our world: has the God of Israel visited and redeemed?(Luke 1:68). For centuries, the Jewish people were impressed by the conviction that God had withdrawn: the spirit of prophecy had ceased, Israel had fallen into the hands of Rome, and all bets on Israel were awaiting God’s visit. Was Simeon waiting for Israel’s comfort? (Luke 2. 25). Similarly, was it Anna’s prayer?Waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem? (Luke 2:38).
These were days of high expectation. Now, was God’s long-awaited visit about to happen? In fact, he was approaching in a way that no one imagined.
