December 17th? Daily devotion CHARLES SPURGEON

Verse of the day: I remember you. (Jeremiah 2. 2)

Notice that Christ takes pleasure in thinking of the Church and contemplating her beauty. As the bird frequently returns to its nest and the traveler hurries home, the spirit continually pursues the object of its choice. We cannot look too diligently at the face of our Lord. From all eternity, has the Lord Jesus found his delight with the sons of men? (Proverbs 8:31). His thoughts extended to the moment when his chosen ones were about to be born into the world. He saw them in his foreknowledge. David wrote: “In your book, were all my days written, each one written and determined, while none of them were there yet? (Psalm 139. 16). When the world was created, the Lord Jesus was there and established the boundaries of the people according to the number of children of Israel. Several times before his incarnation he came down to earth in the likeness of a man. In the oaks of Mame, in the Jaboque stream, near the walls of Jericho and in the oven of Babylon, the Son of Man visited his people. Since his soul rejoiced in these people, he could not rest away from them, because his heart desired them. They were never absent from his heart, because the Lord Jesus had written their names on his hand and engraved them on his side. Just as the breastplate containing the names of the children of Israel was the most brilliant adornment worn by the high priest, the names of Christ’s elect were his most precious jewels and shone in his heart. We can often forget to meditate on our Lord’s perfections, but He keeps reminding us. Let us reprimand ourselves for forgetting the past and pray that grace will always be to bring it to the most endearing memory. Lord, paint in the eyes of my soul the image of your Son.
