Christian courage is the will to say and do the right thing without regard to earthly cost, because God promises to help and save him in Christ’s account. An act requires courage if the likelihood of being painful is high. be physical, as in wars and rescue operations, or pain can be mental, as in confrontations and controversies.
Courage is essential to spreading and preserving the truth of Christ. Jesus promised that the spread of the gospel would find resistance: “Then thou shalt be troubled and shalt kill thee. Will you be hated by all nations because of my name?( Matthew 24:9). And Paul warned that even in the church, faith in truth would be in trouble: “I know that after I leave, voracious wolves will enter among you, who will not forgive the flock. you men will rise up saying wicked things to guide the disciples after them (Acts 20:29-30; see also 2 Timothy 4:3-4).
- True evangelization and teaching will therefore require courage; flee from resistance in evangelism or teach Christ dishonor; there is a kind of cowardice that only tells the truths that can be told for sure; Martin Luther expresses it like this:.
If I profess with the strongest voice and expose in the clearest way every part of God’s truth, except precisely that point that the world and the devil are currently attacking, I do not confess Christ, though I boldly profess Christ. Where is the battle? he argues is that the soldier’s loyalty is proven, and to be consistent on all battlefields beyond that is useless if the soldier hesitates at this point. (Cited in Parker T. Williamson, Standing Firm: Reclaiming Christian Faith in Times of Controversy [Springfield, PA: PLC Publications, 1996], P. 5)
