In his text 5 reasons why you should preach about God’s wrath, Steven Lawson argues that Christ’s work requires us to preach about hell, because Christ preached about God’s wrath and suffered God’s wrath for us:
Christ’s preaching demands it: ironically, Jesus had more to say about divine anger than anyone else in the Bible. Our Lord spoke of God’s wrath more than He spoke of God’s love. Did Jesus warn against the hell of fire? (Matthew 5. 22) and?Destruction? Eternal (7. 13) where there is crying and cracking of teeth?(8. 12). To put it bluntly, Jesus was a preacher of the fire of hell and condemnation. Men in the pulpits would do well to follow Christ’s example in his preaching.
- The glory of the cross demands it: Christ suffered the wrath of God for all who wanted to invoke him; if there is no divine wrath.
- There is no need for the cross.
- Let alone the salvation of lost souls.
- It is only when we recognize the reality of God’s wrath against those who deserve to be judged that we discover that the cross is glorious news.
- Many of the occupiers of the pulpit today boast of having a cross-cutting ministry.
- Though rarely.
- If he ever preaches divine wrath.
- It is a violation of the cross itself.
