9 a day: patience, peace, joy, love, self-control, temperance, loyalty, kindness, kindness.
Welcome to “9 a day” become like Jesus. This is a series presented by Langham Partnership. My name is Chris Wright and I am the international director of langham Partnership. Langham’s founder was John Stott. I know, but he used to say a prayer every morning in which he spoke to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, and this is what he prayed for:
Heavenly Father, I pray that on this day I will live in your presence and please you more and more; Lord Jesus, I pray that today I will take my cross and follow it; Holy Spirit, I pray that on this day you will fill me. with me with yourself and may your fruit mature in my life: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, kindness, fidelity, longevity and self-control.
Therefore, every day, John Stott prayed that God would fill him with the fruit of the Spirit, so it may not be surprising that so many people have said that John Stott was among the most Christian people they have ever known.
Cristics. This is the topic we will discuss throughout this series. At the end of his life, in July 2007, John delivered his last public address at the Keswick Convention and took the opportunity to say that what God loves most for all his children is that we are more like Christ, that we become more like Jesus.
So the question is how does the resemblance to Christ happen?, one of the keys that John Stott leaves us as a clue is when we cultivate the fruit of the Spirit, those mental qualities or characteristics mentioned by the Apostle Paul. That? In Galatians 5: 22-23.
And as we begin, it is important to establish a context for what Paul says, who teaches these neophytes that they should not be subjected to slavery according to Old Testament law, on the contrary, what counts is faith expressed through love. On the other hand, he says, they should not be subjected to the bondage of their own sinful desires and passions; on the contrary, they must serve one another with love; that is why, for Paul, love is a key element of Christian life. He makes a great contrast between what he calls the works of the flesh, which he describes in verses 19 to 21, a blacklist containing greed, dishonesty, sexual immorality, etc. , and on the other hand, speaks of the fruit of the Spirit. verses 22 and 23
But it is very important to see that when Paul speaks of the fruit of the Spirit, it is not a whole new set of rules and norms. These are fruits! And it takes a long time for fruits to grow in a tree. Likely, the fruit of the Spirit needs time to grow in the character of a Christian. So Paul is not talking about performance, a quick solution to success in the Christian life. He speaks of a Christian character. And if you want the fruit to grow, what do you do?You don’t varnish the branches, you don’t force the tree, you don’t color the fruit. If you want fruit, pay attention to the roots of the tree, to the ground. You grow the land, make sure it’s well watered and fertilized. And in the same way in the Christian life, if you want the fruit of the Spirit to grow, you have to cultivate the land of the Word of God and let it sink into our lives paying attention to the Bible, to encounter. other Christians where the Bible is preached, taught and studied in groups.
And that’s what we’re going to do in this series. This is what the Langham Partnership seeks to do around the world, so that together we can become more Christlike by bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit, so that our testimony of the Lord Christ can be more authentic and credible.
